Shirt Updates: How to Plan Your DIY Embroidery

Are you looking for ways to make old t-shirts new again?

You should try embroidery!

Embroidery is a fun and rewarding skill to learn. Give yourself something to do while watching TV instead of getting distracted by your phone.

If you’ve felt intimidated in the past by all of the supplies needed to take an embroidery project on, fear not! In this article, we’ll walk you through how to plan your DIY embroidery project and what tools you’ll need.

The DIY Embroidery Tools You’ll Need

To get started with an embroidery project, you’ll need some cloth. You can purchase specific light-colored even-weave cotton, or you can use an old t-shirt, preferably light in color as well.

Cotton embroidery floss can be found at any arts and crafts store or online. There are a bunch of different colors to choose from.

Purchase an embroidery hoop if you don’t already have one. A basic six-inch wooden one is excellent to start with.

Find yourself a needle. You can use an embroidery needle, but if you don’t have one, it’s alright. A needle you’d find in a sewing kit will work.

Last but not least, you’ll want a water-soluble pen and a pair of scissors.

Pick an Embroidery Pattern

You can find a ton of embroidery patterns online. There are free options and patterns you can buy if you’re looking for something specific. You can also come up with something in your mind as well and draw it yourself!

You can draw the pattern on your t-shirt with the water-soluble marker or draw it onto a wash-away stabilizer.

How to Figure out Your Shirt Design

If you are working with a t-shirt, pick a place on the shirt you would like to embroider and set that section in your embroidery hoop. Then, center your pattern in the middle of the hoop and start stitching!

Follow the pattern with your needle, picking the right colors and stitches for the pattern you selected. You can also choose whatever colors you prefer. Designing DIY embroidery is part of the fun.

If you’re a more advanced embroiderer, you may be working with an embroidery machine instead. These machines have benefits, like repeatable results, but sometimes a nice handstitched shirt is the way to go. It all depends on what you prefer.

Custom Patches

You can design and make your own patch as well! These are fun to incorporate into a design. You can create a patch, add more embroidery around it, or attach the patch, and you are ready to go.
